Dirty Bank Notes
• The discovery of a systematic attempt to flood the note circulation of one of the most popular Banks, by the issue of spurious note*, has not created much surprise in the minds of those who arc familiar with the various notes, and in too many cases their filthy condition, as issued and re-issued by the various Banks collectively and individually. The .only j excuse which can be offered by these institutions is- that .their paper is kept so long in circulation, especially the- notes of small denoininatipns. that in the course of passing through sc many hands, it can only be expected that a large amount of " matter out of place" should be collected by them. We are prepared to -admit this as a fact, at once, but this is no excuse for a branch bank reissuing such dirty or mutilated notes once they hare been returned to the bank. There is no Banking Institution in the colon v which i» not, at any moment prepared t-< meet an expansion of its note circulation even to an abnormal extent, or amount, and the paper which is in readiness to meet that expansion, could be used with very little trouble to replace unclean nou's whieii ought to be takon out of circulation. Ajcontenipofciry Say ■ . • Tiie interchange of dirtynotes must undoubtedly contribute to the spread of all kinds of disease; When it is borne in mind that a b:>nk note may pass through hands— aud other receptacles— of all sorts and conditions, of .men, and that unlike a coin it cannot, be cleaned, the risks people daily run are apparent." We endorse thesert-marks.r Some of the notrs which are In 'eireufaticin on this coast, and which, bear the appearance of, ; long sbjoutfnings 1 in^t he f residences' of (he^ natives, 'aris really*' sic&ynihg to' -handle. I The spurious notes passed at Christchurch were made as greasy r.nd dirty as 'possible in order to resemble as much as possible the "real ones." .'>.
