The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1884 The Mayor
At the meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday niglit last, the Mayor returned thanks to the Council, and through them to the burgesses, for placing him for a second time unopposed in the honourable position he now occupies. We are quite certain that very few ratepayers will be dissatisfied by Mr Sherwill's re-election to the Chief Magistracy of the Borough. During the past year he has performed the duties of the position with marked ability and success, and from an intimate knowledge of his character, we are sure that at the end of the current year he will still possess the confidence and esteem of a large majority of the ratepayers. Some objection has occasionally been raised in different boroughs in the colony to the practice of electing the same person for a second term. In cases where the burgess holding the office has shown himself well fitted for it, we believe there is a considerable good to be derived. The experience gained in one year of office will always prove beneficial during a second. On the other hand, when a man has shown himself unfit for the position, the short term of one year hardly gives him time to do serious harm, and he can be got rid of without much trouble. We congratulate Mr Sherwill, and hope that he will be spared many years to assist in the management of the affairs of the borough.
