A report and fcstiniate 1 from tKe Engineer on the+worlr of.^rerctjng the new Manchester street bridge were then handed round thft Council' table* . • ■ • It was resolved, That the Engineer be instracted to prepare plans and specifications for a 33 feet wide bridge with footpaths in accordance with his report. The following report from the Public Works Committee was then read and adopted, the alterations in the present arrangements to come into operation on the first of January, 1885 :— " In accordance with a minute passed at the last meeting of the ' Council your Committee beg to report with reference to the maintenance of the streets, &c, in the Borough, dri'd recommend." 1. That^'tne existing arrangement of employing -day- labor be not interfered with, the-Coniniitfee being of opinion, after haying fully, considered the matter that any other' arrangement .would be more expensive, and less' satisfactory. 2. That tenders : be inrited for the hire of one-horse anS two-horse teams at per day. .- .],.,;,' ;.• ; ■ ■ 3. Thai tenders _ be invited for the supply arid delivery of metal at per yard in two contracts, one to be for delivering the metal at any places where requested on the eastern side of the railway line, and the • other confract to be for metal delivered on the. western side of the railway line. to have the option of tendering for the whole in one contract. W. D. Nicholas, Chairman of Committee." A report of the rates in arrears for 12 months or more was then read and ordered to stand over till next meeting. The following tenders for metalling were then opened • — Derby street : J\ Belfit, £61 10s; K. Bowler and Son, £61 ; A Hennett, £62 15s ; John Smith, £73. Heatlie street: R. 13owlerand Son, £126; A. Hennett, £115 15s; John Smith, £112 10s; J. Belfit, £99 2s 6d. Railway line : J. Belfit, £37 2s 6d. A. Hennett, £48 ; John Smith, £36. The following tenders were accepted: — Bowler and Son for Derby street. J. Belfit for Beattie street, and John Smith for Bailway line. A petitionrwas read from 37 burgesses and others praying theCoaneil not to cause any deviation in the road running through Manchester Square. Cr Goodbehere sajd ; ihat he had himself prepared another plan, which might now be called Np.3, nnd.wliich.he thought would be a fair compromise between the two other plans. He then produced his plan, aad moyedthe following resolution, which wa& -.seconded by Cr Fowles : — That the plan for the proposed alterations infManchester square, and now produced by the mover, showing* a circular enclosure in the centre of the Square, be adopted, and that the surveyor call for tenders for making the alteration. The Mayor agreed with the motion and spoke strongly in support of it.
