In answer to Mr I'ownie Stewart the Premier said the Government would prefer leasing to purchasing. The House dirided on the Premier's^ amendment and carried it by 49 to 24. j Mr Bolleston asked the Gbyecnment if they intended submitting the resolution to the Council. | The Premier characterised the question as an unheard of one, and declined to answer it. , M r Rolleston replied that if such was not done, an , unconstitutional .wrong would be done, and a dangerous precedent created. The House went into Committee on the Beet-root Sugar Bill, which was reported with amendments and ordered to be considered the following day. - ; : The debate on the . Consolidated Stook Bill was continued. - : Mr Harron had . intended to trarerse the Bill, but as the leader of the Opposition had proposed a motion which was tantamount to a Vote of want of confidence he should take, another opportunity of addressing the House on the Bill.' ; : .Vl r Montgomery was in a similar position and would not address the House. - The House divided — Ayeu, 48 ; Noes. 15. The second reading was carried. This Da.j.; Wnhanui was heard at the bar ot. the House on the Native Lnnds Settlement Bill. The chief's speech was v to the effect that the native lands on which no white man had set foot should be admisistered by natires themselves, and' he characterised the bill as dangerous -"with teeth, its head, and sting in its tail." The Native Minister expressed admiration of Wahanui's address, which he said was so evidently friendly and given with a desire to meet the House in framing laws beneficial to natives, while not injurious to the colony.
