A negro cook, named George Watkin, was arrested on Saturday evening charged with the larceny of £23 and two watches from a boardinghouse, where he was employed at the time the larceny was committed. In the case of Thorne v the Commissioner of Government Insurance, the decision was given for the defendant on the point raised, that the Commissioner was appointed by, and could be removed by the Governor. He could not make or assure any permanent appointment in his department. This virtually settles the case in favour of defendant. Dvsxmv, This Day. William Sims, the man Who was imprisoned some time ago for defrauding by means of the * ( matchbox" trick, made his appearance at the Police Court to-day on a charge of gambling in a railway carriage by performing the '* three-card" manoeuvre. The evidence went to show that he had induced a young man to makfe two bets, whereby he was victimised' to the extent of £7. Counsel for accused contended that the " three-card" was simply a betting game and not illegal. The Resident Magistrate reserved judgment. Chbistohuboh, This Day. At the opening of the Supreme Court civil sittings yesterday a delay of more than an hour was caused by the absence of the sheriff, who had the jury panel in his possession. Mr Justice Johnston expressed some cmbarassment as should he deem it necessary, to infliet a heavy fine on the sheriff there was no deputysheriff to levy the amount.
