THE AWAHTTRI HOTEL AND TRAVELLERS.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE STAB.
Sib, — In answer to swagman, or,' as he styles himself, " Traveller," I beg to state that on the evening mentioned a man arrived at the hotel carrying a swag. He did not ask for tea, but a shake-down. I replied, " Yes." He then asked if he could ro in the parlor by the fire ; I told him it was occupied, but would be disengaged about nine o'clock, at which time I invited him in the parlor A t bed time I told hrn to get his swag and make his bed in the billiard room. He replied, " I am going to pay for a bed upstairs," to which I said, " Then why did you ask me for a shake-down ?" This can be substantiated by two independant wit nesses. I really do not see any harm in asking Constable Gillespie if he wanted any tea. He had had a hard day's ride of over 30 miles about Camp bell town, and had nearly drowned his horse in swimming the river. If ''Tiaveller" wanted his tea, why did be not ask then, before the constable, who, he says, arrived soon after, which must have been 9 o'clock, at least. How was it, Mr iiditor, this swagger stayed at the hotel on Thursday, 18th September, arrived in Feilding nest morning, 19th, and yet his letter does not appear for a week afterwards P Mr Editor, when making attacks it is usual to do away with the nora de plume and insert the proper name, so as one can see his opponent, and guard against a stab in the dark. It would have been better taste had the writer left Constable Giliespie's name out of the ; question. I will quote verbatim the ! dreadful charge : " Arriving at the hatel • at a quartet to six, I engaged a bed and asked for tea, but was informed that it was over hours ago," which is literally nntrue. But how dreadful ! What a •torm in a teapot ! — I am. &c ,
