The Benevolent Society
The meeting held on Saturday evening last at the Public Hall was attended by the principal residents of the Borough. Several apologies were received from rarious persons. The Rev. J. Jones, President, was in the chair.'
The secretary, E. H. Wright, read- the report, and the treasurer, H. L. SherwilF, the balance-sheet, both of which were adopted.
D. H. Macarthur, Esq., M.H.R., was elected President, and .Ji essrs AF. V.. Lethbridge aud Charles Bray, Vice-Presi-dents.
The following gentlemen were appointed as a committee, viz., Messrs Bishop, Eade, Stevens, Kirton, Webster, Wright, Sherwill, Lethbridge and J. Bartholomew, the clergymen of all denominations to be members, ex officio.
A vote of thanks to the retiring officers terminated the proceedings.
A meeting of the committee wa.B held afterwards, when Mr J. Stevens was appointed secretary, and Mr Webster treasurer. BALANCE-SHEET.
Receipts.-7 Balance, 25th August, 1881 , £2 11s9d; subscriptions and donations, August 1881 to August 1884, £18 15s 6d; total, £21 7s 3d. Balance (in Bank) 30th , August, 1884, £2 7s Ud.
