Halcombe and SherwilTs Sale
The stock sale at the yards of Messrs Halcombe and Shebwill on Thursday last was the best that has ever been held in Feilding. From its inception, when the first lots were advised to the auctioneers, it was evident that a strong feeling of confidence was felt by vendors, while the many enquiries made from outside places showed tliat unwonted interest was excited in the minds of wellknown buyers. In the early morning, it was feared that the inclemency of the weather might deter a number of the lots advertised from being brought to the sale yards, but the splendid condition of the roads leading to Feilding from all parts ot the Manchester Block and the surrounding districts enabled the whole to be brought to the market. It was also expected that many of the buyers might be prevented by the weather, but such was not the case, for the largest and best audience Mr SnEitwiLLhas yet addressed as an auctioneer assembled at the sale. From the commencement, the bidding was brisk and the competition keen. The advance in the prices for beet was very marked, as was also the case with fat sheep. We were glad to observe a demand for good hacks, the prices obtained for several of which will be an encouragement for owners to offer a few good animals at the next sale. The prices obtained for the various classes of stock will be found in our commercial columns. We are pleased to learn that immediately on the conclusion of the sale, several large entries were made for another stock sale to be hrld after the usual interval, and yesterday and to-day the list has been largely augmented. We have given a lengthy notice to this sale because the subject is of such deep interest to our readers in the Kiwitea and other stock raising districts. A riseof a pound sterling a head iu beef means that many a struggling farmer is made comparatively independant for the next twelve months at least, while every one connected with them by business relations shares in their prosperity.
