The Feilding Star. THURSDAY SEPT. 18, 1884. The Financial Statement
Sir Julius Yogel made the Financial Statement of the Government <m Tuesday I evening, and iv every part it shows that j his abilities as a statesman and talent as ■ a financier have in no way deteriorated j during tho years he ha.« been absent from I political life in the Colony. The simple manner in which the condition of the finances is put makes it possible for every taxpayer to clearly understand that which interests him so much. In the past it has always been a subject of complaint that only an expert could make " head or tail " out of the Financial Statement. Sir Julius Yogel said that the chief difficulty of the Colony was the intricate entanglement of the accounts, and he proposes to sweep away the whole mass of useless red-tapeism which now encumbers the working of the Public Accounts. He hints that the sole management of the railways is too much for one man, however able he may be. and suggests that he should have the assistance of a board of business men, to whom he might refer for information on business questions. Due prominence is given to the Northern Trunk Railway, and it is promised that the work wiil be of the first importance in the eyes of the Government. Only one and a half millions are proposed to be raised in addition to the million already authorised. We regret that want of space prevents us at present making further allusion to the Statement but we will tßke up the subject in a future issue. We are certain that the position of the Government has been much strengthened by the Statement, and it remains to be seen how Major Atkinson will attack it.
