The advantages of having a local member are daily becoming more and more apparent. A private letter received by the Mayor from Mr D.H. Macarthur, M.H.R. shows that gentleman is losing no opportunity of advancing the interests of the district. As some of the matters referred to m the letter are not yet completed it would be preuiatuve to publish the inforniatioa given, but we may state that one matter in which Mr Macarthur has exsried himself has been an attempt to obtain from Government direct grants for repairing damages caused by the late floods. He had also busied himself in the matter of obtaining the land sought to be taken by the Wellington College, and which is claimed as belonging to the Ecrough as a reserve for hospital purposes. He has reason to believe that the Minister of Lands will assist in giving just consideration to the claims of the Borough, and should the college authorities introduce a Bill in connection with it. Mr Macarthur expresses his intention of opposing it vigorously. — Manawatu Times.
