Charitable Aid and Oroua Valley Survey

. — — .» - - The followirig is a copy of the letter from kr Macarthur, M.H.R., read at the Borough Council meeting _on Thursday evening last : — H. L. Sherwill, Esq., Mayor, . Feilding. Deab Sir, — I interviewed the then Colonial Secretary about the matter of Charitable Aid, and made this arrangement, which is, I believe, the best to be hoped for at .the present time: — That the Government will give £ for £ to all the payments made by the Borough for Charitable Aid, And will do the same ou the paid subscription list of the Benevolent Society. It will be as well to forward a claim for, say the last six months' disbursements of the Council and of the Society, and if you will send it through me, duly certified to, I will try and get payments for the past grants. For the future an account had better j be sent every quarter, claiming the subsidy. Re the Oroua Valley Survey. As you are doubtless aware, there has been so much uncertainty as to, what Ministry would retain office that I have been unable to get any new survey ordered. Ido not think the matter will be settled this session, but as soon as Mr Stout forms the new Cabinet (which, I believe, will not be opposed by a vote of no-confidence, but will be allowed to stand the session), I will try to get a more thorough survey made. Your's faithfully, D. H. Macabthub. Feilding, Sept. 3rd, 1884.
