Elding Borough Council

An ordinary meeting of the Council, postponed from Thursday evening, was held last evening in the Council Chambers. Presentr-The Mayor and all the Councillors. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The monthly return from the Poundkeeper was read, shewing the number of . animals impounded during the month to hare been 88, the amount received for poundage fees L7 9s, and the amount due to the Council IA Bs. The report of the Finance Committee, recommending the payment of accounts to the amount of L79 6s 2d, was read and adopted. The following correspondence was then read: — Mr Macarthur, M.H.R., « charitable aid, and the survey of the Ortraa, Valley route for the Central Railway; Manchester and Kiwitea Road Boards, re the application from the Council in the matter of assistance towards the cemetery ; petition from a number of ratepayers and residents praying the Council to construct Beattie street. Besolved, That the sum of L5 be appropriated for petty cash. 'The matter of the destruction of Warwick street bridge and the damage to the Manchester street bridge was discussed, and it was resolved to place a lamp at each bridge to prevent danger at night time. . j j Proposed by Cr Higftin, and seconded by Cr Cartliew. That the Engineer be instructed to take immediate steps to place the Manchester street bridge in passable condition.— Carried. The Mayor said the Engineer had reported that an obstruction caused by the flood had forced the course of the Kiwitea stream on to the Kimbolton road again, and that it would be necessary to have the matter remedied. It was resolved, That the matter be referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. The matter of the Warwick street bridge was further discussed, after which Cr Goodbehere moved, and Cr Higgin ■ seconded, That the Engineer consider and report to the Council, at their next meeting, the- best course for replacing the Warwick street bridge recently washed away by the flood, and at the same time ;give a rough estimate of the probable cost of the work.— Carried. Cr Hiegpn called attention to the need of something being done to protect the banks of the Makin'o in Hobson street. Besolved, That the Engineer give instructions to the roadman to prepare a temporary bridge for foot passengers across the Makino in Warwick street. The following tenders for the formation of Derby street, and construction of culverts in same, were then opened :— John Smith, L21 19s 10d ; A- Diamond. L25 10s ; J. Belfit, L24; Bead Bros., L29 14s; A. Hennet, L37 10s ; Hodges and Ward, L25 ; Y>unger and Lain};, L26 ; P. Gray, L29 19s; G. Wiekhani, L27 ; J- H. Anderson, L24 10s. iiie leader of John Smith was accepted. The Mayor moved, in accordance with notice, that plant and specifications be prepared for the formation and metalline of Hailway Line road west from Camden street to Grey street, and that tenders be called for the same. Seconded by Cr KutLerford. Cr Higgin moved, in accordance with ■otiee. That plans and specifications be prepared for the formation of Beattie ttceet, from Camden street to Kimbolton road, including a bridge over the Makino, and that tenders be called for the same forthwith. Cr Goodbehere seconded the notion. .... Cr Higgin spoke at Mine length in sup. portot the motion, urging the importance of the work. Cr Thompson opposed the construction of the lower part of the work, including the bridge. Cr Loudon spoke tn support of the motion, and the construction of the whole work, which he regarded as very important. Cr Goodbehere spoke in support of the motion. Cr Carthew opposed the construction of that part from Grey street to Kimbolton road for ihe present, as he did not consider it important. He thought there should be a report from the Public Works Committee as to the most urgent works before they resolved on doing the whole of this work.' ' Crs Fowlesand Bichardson supported the work being done as far as Grey street. Cr Rutherford called attention to the need of something being done in Marlborough street, but he would support the motion before tho meeting if the funds would permit Cr Htggin again spoke strongly in sup* port of themotion. He knew of no work that was more urgent. The amendment was put and earned. The formation and metalling oi Railway Line road from Camden street to Grey stteet Seconded by Cr Thompson, who spoke in support of it. The Mayor opposed the amend meni inasmuch as the Council had just resolved to form and metal the other side of the line for the same distance. Cr Higgin spoke to the same effect. After some further conversation the amendment was, by permission of tht Council, withdrawn, and the original motion carried. Cr Carthew moved that the Public Works Committee report as to the work) that would be most urgently required U be constructed during the present finan cial year. Seconded by Cr Fowle*. - After a little discussion the motion wai carried. Besolved. That the Council meet U receive the Engineer's report re Warwicl street bridge en Tuesday next at the sam< - hour and place. Toe Council then adjourned.
