A Fire Brigade
-' • ••• >-.\i Once more the question, we need not say desirableness, of organizing ' a Firo Brigade for Feilding, is about to'bV discussed, a public meeting Baring. - b**n called in the Foresters' Hall 6ik -Monday eTening next at 8 o'clock to consider 'llio "matter. The advertisement calling this meeting is signed by Councillor Worsftild who has taken this step in the moretrieni, not on h» own suggestion merely, bnt lib response to the expiesaed dear* of % number of his fellow townsmen who •/» anxious to see a Fire Brigade started. and are willing either to bear their taWe in tbe expense of netting the project on foot, or enrolling themselves a». working members of the Brigade. One or two> attempts H is true, hare alreadj bren made to organize and set going an institution of this kind, but for reasons, gome of which at least were obvious, nothing was done beyond meetings being heM, subscriptions promised and a number j6f persons agreeing to constitute theraselv* a a Fire Brigade. It is now two year* since the last meeting was held,: and although there have been several fires in the Borough jrince, destroying valuable * property, no farther action has been taken in tbe matter. On the wJiole . Feihf rag. has enjoyed a happy immunity from fires as compered with/many other townships of a like age and si*?, and this fact has no doubt had much to do with the apathy and indifference which has prevailed with reference to providing vmeans for fire extinction. What-has not been however* may be, and it is well to be prepared to do battle with the devouring element, when its unwelcome* presence requires it. Persons whocomplain, and tbatr justry, of the high rates of insurance,; ahoufdUt least consider the great risks undertake* by a company where there are' ppwiveljr no means existing for { redncing t|te, icjs^et guaranteed, and -while they desire concessions on : the part of tbe insurance offices, should be prepared- to do their share in minimising the risks incurred. This they can do by entering thoroughly into the matter of founding an efficient Fire Brigade in their midst. It would not be practicable or.even necessary her* to provide at first the paraphernalia pf a "crack" brigade, but. a well ; equipped hook, bucket and ladder brigade, *neh as the one at Palmerston .would da grand service in the event of a fire. We : hot* to see a. largely attended meeting* Tin Monday next, especially of the larger^ property owners. We wijl s ,r uot, venture any suggestions ..as.ito way's. jft(d means, but leave these to be duotiHSod, at the meeting, which we sincerely,, hope will result in something moWttiin mire talk, and that the Feilding, Volunteer Fire Brigade will soon be an established fact. ■ . • • : . .•!,«...-, ,;t?
