The Pope Threatened with Dynamite

It is now officially admitted at the Vrtican that serious threats against the Pope's life have been revived from dynair iters. Recently a letter was received at the Vatican, irom a source entitled to credence stating that a well-arranged plan to attack the Papal residence by dynamite bad been matured, and would be carried out ntihe first favourable opportunity, the conspirators aiming at the life uf the Pope This startling intelligence astounded the Cardinals, who at once beid a coherence, and immediately took steps to foil the would-be assassins. An extra guard of picked ineu was posted around the Vatican. The P"p.ft was kept in ignorance of the receipt oc the first letter. The conspirators evidently were hovering about the place, 'and noticed the precautions'raken, for a second letter wu> ■ received, in which the previous threat was renewed, and a boast made that the conspiracy would he carried out in spite of all attempts to prevent it This letter was also withheld from Leo, and the special -.uard was doubled.
