Manchester Horticultural Society

*» j The annual general meeting of the society touk plaCe at Mr Bray's office last i evening. Mr J. H. Stevens was voted to the chair, and called upon the secretary, Mr E. Goodbehere, to read the miuutes of the last general meeting, which being : read were confirmed. ! The annual bnlauce sheet, as prepared by the secretary and treasurer, Mr Good- I behere, was then read, lt showed the i receipts to have been £73 15s 4d, and the expenditure £66 17s 6d, leaving a balance in hand of £6 17s lOd. The assets of the society amounted to £11 6s 10d, while ' the liabilities were nil. I j The secretary then read the following ■ . report: — Jn presenting my balance sheet for t 1883-4 a report of tlie Society's doings | may be acceptable to the members. I j think the Society may be congratulated | upon tiio success which has attended its operations during the past season. The exiiibits, in addition to being more numerous were admitted to be equal to anything i previously exhibited in Feilding, notwithstanding the very unfavorable season for . horticulture, particularly at the time of | the autumn show. The fruit and vegetable class was extremely well represented , at the autumn show, and the collections of apples surprised many visitors. A n»w feature in connection with the spring show, was the exhibition of poultry, and for a iirst attempt may be pronjunceda success. Although a celebrated breeder -"from a neighbouring town competed in most of the classes, more than half the prizes were taken by local exiiibits, and another time I think would tike more. The think < of tho society are due to Mr L. Holden, who gave several valuable prizes to be competed for in this class. With reference to thc Society's finances it will be be seen from the balance-sheet that their total income for the year amounted to £73 15s 4d, and their expenditure £66 17s 6d, learing a credit balance of £6 18s lOd, besides several small amounts still owing. These figures show a slight improvement as compared with last year, but there is an unaccountable falling off in the receipts at the doors, for while in 1882 3 they amounted to £42 6s last year they only reached £26. Against this deficiency there is an increase in member's subscriptions of £6. The prize money paid in cash last year amounted to £29, being an increase of nearly £7 over the previous year. The thanks of the members are due to those gentlemen who acted as judges at the various shows, and to those who generously presented special prizes to be competed for at the society's exhibition, nnd also to the Feilding Brass Band for playing gratuitously at the two shows. Edmund Goods khebe, Hon Sec. Feilding, August 1, 1884. ihe balance-sheet and report as read were adopted. The Chairman remarked that the state of the funds and ot the society generally reflected much credit upon the secretary and treasurer. A hearty vote of thanks to him for his services *»as then proposed by Mr Towler, seconded by Mr E. Worsfold, and carried unanimously. A letter was read from Mr F. Hunt, of Bulls, apologising for not being able to attend the meeting. j It was resolved that Mr F. Y. Lethbridge be re-appointed president, and Messrs Macarthur, Sherwill, and Roe vice-presideuts. The following gentlemen were appointed the committee for the ensuing year : — Messrs G. W. Fowles, T. Hall, T. P. James, C. Lucas, W. D. Nicholas, T. A. Price, J. H. Stevens, W. Stevens, E. Fowles seconded, Thafc t' ere be two classes, one for residents in the Manchester Block and the other for outsiders.— Carried/. '•■:.'. This closed the business pf the general meeting. -.
