A Model Bank Manager

♦ A common complaint against the banks is that they are too severe on their customers, and that by the refusal of credits they have caused more insolvencies than all the droughts we have ever had. The late manager of' the Colonial Bank nt Horshsun, however, it must be admitted, was a bright exception to the usual closefisted rule. 1 hat he was a perfect treasure t--> the local Micuwbers, there is abundant reason To kuow. It appears from the evidence given in the Insolvent Court that Victor Prytss, the manager in qne c tion, had a boon companion named John Gregory, with whom he was in the habit of playing curds for nionev, and from whom he occasionally borrowed a hundred pi unds or so. One good turn deserves another, so Grpgory, who had his busiiie-s accounts in the bank, was allowed to overdraw to t;.e extent of £6000 without security. The way in which the authorities at the head office were bamboozled was ingenious, if irregular. The favoured custom<T used to overdraw every week, but on each Monday night the overdraft was covered by cheques on towns outside of Horsham. These cheques during the week wero invariably returned dishonoured ; and thus the large overdraft was created in a period of six months. But the happy family o c bank manager an<l client could not te kept together for long. The end of it is, tnat Gregory is now in goal tor uttering forged bills ; and Victor Pryiz is "living with his friends" at South Melbourne —Daily Telegraph.
