Kiwitea Road Board

An ordinary meeting of this Board was held at its office, Manchester street, yesterday afternoon. Present — Messrs Taylor (chairman), Williamson. Bruce, Saxon, and Bryce The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The fo lowing correspondence was read: Pnblic Works Department, re grant under Roads and Bridges Construction Act, stifcing that the application had been received and would be considered ; Treasury Department, re the £500 imprest grant ; R. Mcßeth, Kiwitea, re his former application for slaughtering license ; Mr Pollock, applying for £10 for expense of felling 50 chains of bush as per agreement; Mr .1. Viles, for permission to fell a, road line fronting his property. Mr Macarthur waited upon the Board with reference to the balancing of the accounts as between the late Oroua County < ouneil and*tbe Board. After a short conversation and certain informal arrangements, he withdrew. Mr Denton waited upon the Board re his application for felting a road line, and was informed that permission would be given on the usual conditions, a resolution beiug afterwards passed to that effect. It was resolved, That Mr Pollock's claim against the Board be withheld, as the Board is not in funds. Resolved, That the Clerk write to Mr Marchant, Chief Surveyor, asking him fco authorise Mr Dundas tg lay off the proposed deviation of Mackay's Line. Resolved, That the application of Mr Viles for permission to fell a road line be granted on the usual conditions. Resolved, I hat the application of Mr Mcßeth for a slaughtering license be granted on the usual conditions. The Board here adjourned to wait upon the manager of the Bank of Australasia to arra 1 ge about an overdraft to enable them to pay iheir liabilities to the County. The result was an arrangement for an overdraft of £500. On re- sitting, the accounts previously read, amounting to £542 2s 7d, were passed for payment. A conversation was held with reference to the charges of the Licensing Committeemen for attending the sittings of the Committee, and as the annual expenses of tbe Committee would nearly cover the amount of the one licensing fee received, it was the general opinion that the sooner this matter he remedied the better. The matter of T. Smith's contract on Perry and Mcßeth's Line (the contractor being now a petitioner in bankruptcy) was discussed. Mr Bray, the Engineer, having been consulted, it was resolved, That Mr Smith's contract be taken over by the Board, tbe Engineer to make fresh arrangements for formation and metalling . the cost not fco exceed that of the former contract. After a conversation on the matter of (he Board's liabilities consequent ou the suspension of the Counties Act, it was resolved, That for the purpose of liquidating outstanding liabilities ot the County, notice will be given of the intention of the Kiwitea Road Board to strike a rate of fd in tbe £ on all property in the Kiwitea district, under powers vested in them by clause 14 of the Counties Act Ameud inent Act, 1882, a special meeting to be called on the same date as the general meeting in August. Mr Williamson called attention to the fact tbat as the duties of the Clerk and Collector would now be considerably increased, his salary ought to be augmented. The Board agreed in this, and ifc was resolved to increase the Clerk's remuner-' ation to £40 per annum. The Board then adjourned.
