The Fielding Star. SATURDAY, JULY 19, 1884. The Elections

On Tuesday next the electors of the Manawatu will show whether they have learned wisdom by the experience of the last ten years. For that long period have they suffered all the evils attendant; u*oon being represented by an absentee member. They have clamoured for a change, and now they have an opportunity of returning Mr Macabthub, a local man, who is equal if not superior to the late member in ability, and who lacks neither energy nor decision of character. We have in Mr Macarthur a man who will neither turn to the right hand nor to the left when f llowing a course which he believes will promote the interests of the district, and the welfare of the electors. He has as fair a knowledge of Parliamentary practice as is possible for one to have who has never represented a constituency in the House. Mr Macabthur has served the Manawatu well ■nd faithfully in the various positions he _as held in the County Councils and Road Boards, and the experience gained therefrom, combined with his admitted ability, eminently fits him for tbe position of a member of Parliament. During his course of addresses to the electors in the various centres, he has in nearly every case secured a vote of confidence. Wo are certain, as far as any- j thing in this world can be certain, from the reports of the various committees that Mr Macabthub will head the poll. Mr Fbaseb will, doubtless receive a fair measure of support, the high estimation in which he is held by a large circle of friends will secure him their aid — not from any faith in his ability as a -politician, but from their good feeling towards him as a man. But many of these will sacrifice even their private feelings for the benefit of the community, and will put themselves and their affections out of sight to Votb fob Macabthub.
