Sir Julius Yogel on Major Atkinson
Sir Julius Vopel has addressed the electors ot Christchurch North through the newspapers. At Ashburton he had admitted the responsibility for thirteen mil ions, because he did not wish to appear to shirk the responsibility, but he ought to have deducted nearly a mil ion of Imperial guaranteed bonds utinegoti- [ ated, and a million authorised in 1876." '•Mjijnr Atkinson was a party to the four lean of 1874, and to a million of | 1876, and deducting these, my responsibility, apart from Major Atkinson's, is ei;jht millions only. A number of nien new to public life,-who have no knowledge of me excepting thai; when I was out of the way it became convenient to make me the type of an extravagance to contrnst with the asserted economy of others, have thus conceived a false idea concerning me. Major Atkinson, by muddling his accounts into a nunvber of divisions, and having recourse to arvariefcy of tem- | porary expedients, deceives himself and deceives others as to what he is doing. He will leave the Treasury with an imI mense amount of debt to be either borrowed permanently, or kept afloat by temporary expedients." Sir Julius Yogel then goes on to twit Major Atkinson for appearing to think that when a railway is I made its advantages have ceased unless it is as a taxing machine. He declares that a change of Government should take place on the House meeting.
