Election Notices - -j-ypANAWATU ELECTION To F. Y. Lethbridge, Esq., G M. Sxelson, Esq., and the elec toi's signing the above requis tion. *• Gentlemen, In response to yon , very flattering and gratifying rcque. ; i I have great pleasure in consontin to be nominated as a candidate fo I Manawatu at the coming election. I shall take an early opportunity c (.' addressing the electors at the vuriou 1 ! centres, and explaining my politica views in detail. ? In the meantime I may state that am more in accord with Die policy o the Atkinson Ministry than with tha of any of the numerous leaders on tin other side of the present House I I Though that Ministry has no doub made mistakes I believe the leadim members of it havo on the vhol. worked honestly, according to thei: lights, fur the* goud oi' the colony a' la-go, and that especially thoy hirvc iri.d io promote tho 'prosperity of the country districts by liberalising the Io nd laws, and by their scheme foi tlie con:-t.i*u_h'-"ii oi'royls* and brid:---.:-;. th.c partial fri lure of whicli throyi: want, of fluids is attributable to c-'U.o; beyond tho control of any Government. 1 cannot, however, agree with Mr Eolleston'-s projected scheme oi perpetual leasing, or with what it i. now the fashion to call the nationalization of the land. Let the Crown lands be leased ou the easiest terms compatible with due provision for survey and road making, but as under tho present Act let a purchasing clause always bo granted alter a fair proportion of improvement has been made. The truest nationalization of the land, I hold, is to settle it with freeiiolder;- in moderate sized blocks, trusting, for revenue to the development of the resources of the country caused by such settlement rather than to rf nts extracted by a Central Government from a State tenantry. I agree generally with the native policy of the Atkinson Ministry, and especially so with Mr •Bryoe's pro- ! posal for the resumption of the preemptive right. I am iv favour of secular education, and as long as ihe finances of the colony warrant it, of free primary education, and in any case of free education up to the fourth standard. I should like to see our railways managed by a non-political Board, the members of which should . only be removable in tho same manner as Judges of the Supreme Court. Other and minor questions I will deal with when addressing the electors face to nice. If I have the honor to he elected, I can conscientiously say that I will endeavour to the hest of my ability to represent the district as a whole, without bia_ in favour of any particular part of it, while remembering at the same time that a member is elected to watch over the interests of the colony at large. Your Obedient Servant, J). H. MACARTHUR. TO DONALD FKASEH, ESQ. Q IR, — We the undersigned, Electors of the Mnnawatu District, request that jou will allow yourself to be nominated as a Candidate to represent the District in the House of Representatives at the forthcoming election.
