Ho said he would support measures, not men. The Secretary of State of the United States writes to New Zealand that it is the intention of the American Government to present a gold watch and cltain to both Captain Gray, or tho Stella, and Captain Greigh, of the Kekeno, in recognition of their services in rescuing the crew of the American vessel Sarah H. Hunt, at the Auckland islands. Alfred Kemp, chief officer of the English barque Hudson, was committed for trial for refusing to assist a police constable who was being maltreated by three ot the crew of his vessel. Chbistchubch, This Day. C. Fraser addressed the electors of Coleridge on Thursday night. He announced himself as a strong Oppositionist and received a vote of thanks A. P. O'Callaghan addressed the electors of Lincoln last night. He supported Yogel. A cordial vote of thanks was recorded. Nklson, This Day. Mr Levastam addressed the electors of this city last night. He would support a Coalition of Yogel, Ormond, Bryce, and Atkinson. He would prefer to follow Ormond. but such a Coalition would form a most stable Ministry. Taubanga, This Day. The committee of Mr J. G. Stewart, a candidate, having received a cablegram from London stating that he would be detained in London by the Tauranga and Eotorua Bail way business, have decided to retire \f r Stewart, leaving the fiVld to Captain Morris, Major Swindley. and Mr W. Kelly. Patea, This Day. Major Atkinson addressed the electors here last night, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. He speaks at Manutahi to-night. . Duxedin, 'his Day. The question of reporting business in Chambers was mentioned by Judge Williams, who expressed himself unop. posed to the presence of the Press. He said he would hare no hesitation in intimating to the Press when he thought a report might prove injurious. Phillip de Meurs haa been committed for trial for forgery. He had received a cheque for a small sum, and after cashing it he had- secured a blank cheque, and made a clumsy attempt at imitating the mnmnnl
