Taonui School
♦ — The first of a series of, "Penny Readings" for the benefit o'f the school was given in the Bunnythorpe Schoolroom, at Taonui, on Monday, .the 16th instant, and although the weather" was unfavorable there was a large attendance, the room being quite full. Readings weie given by Messrs E. Sexton, G. Goldfinch, A. Goldfinch, and F. Bradey. An overture was played in very good style by Mr Slipper on the harmonium^ -and:^Mr Bowman on the vioiiu. Several songs were sung by Messrs \Sli-jperi Gjgifld. finch, and A. Goldfinch, which appeared to be well appreciated ae each gentleman had to reply to an encore. The School Committee took advantage of this-op-^^ portuuity to present a testimonial to5?" Miss Ellen Prendergast, whieh consisted of a writing desk and a very h&ndaome album. Miss Prendergast (wbo is now a pupil teacher at the Feilding School) was a cadet in the Bunnythorpe School for two years and a half. The f uijds for the testimonial were subscribed, by -the parents and friends of the children, as a token of their esteem for this yoitag lady. It was presented by Mr Sexton, the Secretary of Committee, who spoke in high tCims of praise of the kind and attentive manner in which Miss Prettier-' gast had discharged ber duties in the school. Mr Slipper, the master of the school, corroborated what had been said by Mr Sexton, and wished Miss. Prendergast success in the. career she had marked out for herself. The young lady, in a few well chosen words sincerely thanked the children and their friends fog theii kindness. The Chairman of .the' X l . Penny Reading Committee " thank the audience for their attendance . and for .the good 'order wbich had betm kept .by -^uehi. He gave notice that the "Readings '* would be held every Vf o'-day evening:
