Special to " Star." eeutee's telegrams. Received June 21, 1.5 a.m. London, June 20. The Franchise Bill Reform Bill was under consideration in the House of Commons last night, and passed through committee. The Marquis ot Hartington was questioned last night regarding -the military force available for service in Egypt, and the possibility of supcessfully opposing the projected advance into E&ypt Proper, of the. .rebel Arabs.. In reply he declared that the British troops now in that country, could in conjuntion with the Egyptian National Army, be sufficient to defend Upper Egypt against an attack from Sendan. Lord Hartington further announced that General . Stephenson, who now commands the British troops in^Egyp't, has also the directions of any operations that may be made by the combined force. An official liquidator has been appointed to wind up the affairs of the Oriental Bank Corporation.
London, June 18. The cargo of frozen mutton ex steamship Cuzco has been sold at 5d to s_d per pound. The meat is in excellent condition. Juno 19. The Times to-day states that the Porte has addressed a note to tho English Government proposing the withdrawal of the British troops from Egypt, and replacing them by Turkish forces, or by a mixed Turkish*,' English, French; Italian, ' and Spanish force. The Pall Mall Gazette to-day denies the truth of the statement recently current that a large force of Gall as was to be despatched from Abyssinia to relieve the Egyptian garrison at Kassala. Tho Gazette states that King Johannes, of Abyssinia, has only undertaken to facilitate the retreat of the garrison from that town, and not to send a force to its relief. Detachments of Royal Engineers are now under ordera to proceed from Chatham to Epypt without delay. The actual destination of the force is not yet known. The civilian residents at Korosko and Assouan are fleeing. In the House of Commons this afternoon Mr Gladstone was questioned regarding the railway material which it is alleged is being prepared at Woolwhich for use at Souakim. In reply, the Premier admitted the truth of the statement, and announced that the Government had under consideration the expediency of constructing a line of railway from the pork of Souakim ta the Nile in view of its employment for transporting the troop-* composing the expedition which may possibly be despatched into the Southern Soudan during the autumn. In the House of Commons the Hon Evelyn Ashley, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, stated that the Queensland Government were honestly desirous of remedying the labor traffic abuses. At a meeting of 30,000 Orangemen, beld at Belfast, resolutions were passed condemnatory of the administration of Earl -pencer as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. De Gaeriff, who assassinated General Sudeikin, Chief- of the Russian Police has been captured. |
