We gather from a statement ofthe business of the Post Office Savings Banks in New Zealand to December 81st, 1888, that the total number of savings bank offices is 222 ; the number of deposits received during the year, 127,609; total of deposits, £1,178,474 4s ld ; withdrawals numbered 78,405, amounting to -61,295,719 18s Bd, making an excess over deposits of £117,245 14s 2d. The cost of management is £4000 a year, and the average cost of each transaction is 4£d ; interest for the year, £56,046 17s 8d; the accounts opened during the year are 20,886, and closed, 15,967 ; the number of accounts remaining open, 61,986 ; the total to credit of all the accounts is £1,409.751 16s 7d, being an average of £22 15s 2d for each account.
