Sir Julius Yogel at Ashburton

. «. . [PEB UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION. 1 Ashbubton, This Day. Sir Julius Yogel addressed the electors at Ashburton last evening. The hall was densely crowded. Sir Julius was warmly received. He said it was on the advice of his friend Mr Robert Stout that he had come forward as a candidate, and he explicitly contradicted the statement that he did so with a view of advancing his claim against the Government. Ho expressed himself strongly against large borrowing, and said that even moderate borrowing should only be for well de-fined useful work. He strongly disse*i c I from the idea tliat tie railways should be expected to pay the full interest on borrowed money. 1 1 c would favor extension of lines; and the lVorth Island Trunk Railway and Otago Central havinjr been sanctioned, should be completed without delay j and the West Coast line should also be constructed. He -justified the; opposition to the recent increase in Jme railway tariff, which, if quietly accepted, would have placed a dangereus-'power in the hands ofthe Government. He would never do anything calculated to reduce the wages of the working classes, and favoured an extension of the franchise to women. At the conclusion a vole of confidence was proposed and carried.
