HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
THE NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION. DEFEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT Mr Richardson was introduced by Mr Macandrew and Mr C. J. Johnston, and took the oath and his seat. THE ADDBESS IN BEPLT. Dr Newman moved the Address in Reply. He cordially agreed with most of the measures proposed in the speech. It was extraordinary that in such a colony as this it should be necessary to deplore the existence of depression. He deprecated any encouragement of immigration of labour under present circumstances. He believed the State should retain all its unsold land, although that already sold could not he resumed. He approved of Government land policy, and 'believed it would promote settlement. Mr ML W. Green felt he could heartily second the reply, as the speech indicated a broad and liberal policy which would , be beneficial and acceptable to the people of the colony. Mr Steward objected to the speech. The Government had for years retained office by intrigue and finesse. In every point of administration the present Government had failed to deserve the confidence of the country. He moved an addition to the Reply, That the House has no confidence in the Government. ' - Levestam seconded the motion. Yesterday., ,- pported the amr»vA i 1 a motion lor like Mr ba >.-.. - •>*» Mr Conolly dti. ntic.. *.. Mr Wakefield, in ana., a*. ..,.,.- nounced the Government and its administration. Col. Trimble opposed the motion, which, however, he admitted was a perfectly legitimate one. Major Atkinson moved the adjournment of the debate, but Messrs Seddon and Macandrew opposed, urging an immediate division. On division, the motion for an adjournment was lost by 37 to 33. The House then divided on Steward's amendment, which was carried by nine.
