On the House resuming, after the speech, Mr Wakefield and Dr Newman took the necessary oaths and their seats, A now writ was ordered to be issued for the Ashburton seat:, In the Council a committee to prepare an 'address in reply was appointed. In the House petitions were presented by Messrs B;irron, Swan* son, Stewart, Connolly, George, M. W. .Green, Bracken an t Hutchison on Various subjects. A number of returns were given notice of. including /oneUby Mr Montgomery for a return of Joan expenditure in the several districts of the colony. Dr Newman gave notice of an Address in Reply. A large number of papersTwere presented by Ministers, and the House rose. .--.-^ jjune <J. In the Legislative Council to-day Captain Baillie was reappoin ted Chairman of Committees, and a number of the usual sessional committees were appointed.—- • Mr Waterhouse asked that lie might be exempted from the Petitions Committee, saying that the growth of the power of these committees was - quite unconstitutional, and there was no parallel to? jt in any other part of the Empire. v,v Tlie House met at 2.30 p.m. - .•» A large number of petitions were presented and ' notices .of motion given, including a number of new Bills;. , : : Mr Macandrew. for Mr Bathgate, gave noti ce of moving for a committee to inquire into the causes of the present com* mercial and financial depression ; and Mr Hursthouse of a motion to discontinue Hansard. . .; ;? In reply to Mr Hutchison, Mr. Dick said he accepted the responsibly for the appointment of the present master of the Burnham Industrial School, all 'the testimonials and other information having convinced him that the man was suited for the position.
