Wife Beating
On the subject of wife beating and its penalty in New South Wales, the Sydney Morning- Herald says: I homas Banner, convicted of assauit and occasioning actual bodily harm to his wife, was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for thr^e years, and ordered to be k>pt for the first six months ot that time hi irons. The powers of judges in wife beating 1 cases have been largely increased under the new criminal iaw of New South Wa'es. In addition to sentencing offenders to imprisonment, and ordering them to be kept in irons, the court can impose solitary confinement and whipping; and, further, if in the opinion of the judge the future safety of thfc wife is in peril, he may add to the sentence a declaration that she shall no longer be bound to cohabit with her husband, which dec aration will have the effect ot a decree of judicial separation on the ground of cruelty. This is a great improvement on the old system, where a husband was allowed to g ye his wife *' moderate ca«tigation" with impnnity Wife beaters :re amongst the worst law breakers, and are bad citizens, and their punishment should be no less than tliat meted out in criminal assault.
