AN IN FAMOUS MOCKEKY.
(Continued.) (advertisement . ) " Strong drink is raging." It kindles and keeps up a burning thirst within the drunkard. However long aud however much he may have been drinking he still cries give, give. How with his trembling hand he clutches it with an inhuman ferocity if perchance lie should have been kept from it for a little time. See the inveterate drunkard, when temporarily debarred from the cup that enslaves him and is rapidly killing him. How despondent he becomes, and how pitifully he pleads "just for one more glass," even as the ugh life itself depended on his getting it there and then. At other times he feels himself stun;; and goaded to sheer desperation by being thus deprived. At such times he would do anything to get some drink. He would sell his own clothes, or his own bread. He would sell his children's clothes and bread, if thereby he could get some drink, even though he would know al> the time his action would result in starving and killing himself and his children. To such an extent does the propensity for strong drink grow and rage, that when goaded by it men are deaf and blind to every consideration. Strong drink also causes angry passions to rnge. When thoroughly under its inflaming influence old grievances are remembered ; slights are conceived ; injuries are imagined and exaggerated ; friendships wither and die ; new enmities of the bitterest and darkest kind are established, and tragical and bloody sequels are the final results. Shall this foe continue to deceive, mock, an<l ruin men, as hitherto P Shall its infatuating ii.fluenees still render men blind to its character aud tendencies ? God forbid ! May all speedily show their wisdom in forsaking it wholly, anil may its grim and bloody memory perish.— J. Clovek.
