Feilding Jockey Club
At the meeting of Stewards of the Jockey Club, heM on Saturday ereaing last, the Secretary reported having sent notice to the supposed promoters of the " Gundagai " swindle, and to several gentlemen who were supposed to know something of the circHmstances of the case, requesting them to attend and give evidence. The men Atkins, the owner of Charlie (late Gundagai) alias Jack Spratt, and Johnston, the man who entered Charlie — probably because they had no reason* able explanation of their conduct to offer, or had other important business to attend to — did not put in an appearance. Two of the gentlemen asked to give evidence kindly took the trouble to come a considerable distance to do so, and their statements assisted the Stewards to come to the decision they did, viz., to disqualify both the two men and the .horse Charlie for ever. The evidence was clear and straightforward, and the Stewards had no other course open to them. It was shown that the plan had been concocted some days previously, and how people clever enough to work it out as it was could have been so foolish as to let any outsiders i'lto "tin* swim" at all, seems a mystery, but they did do bo. and have now to pay the penalty. The Stewards deserve great credit for the manner in which the enquiry has been conducted all through the piece, and for their zeal in bringing to justice such men. We trust other clubs will endorse their action.
