The Maoris in the Upper Wanganui distwct have arrested two Europeans named Barry and MacDonnell, who were prospecting for gold on native lands. The prisoners have been sent by the natives on to Alexandria, and the Hon. Mr Bryco is considering whether to prosecute them for unlawfully prospecting. A man named Alfred Hawley was found yesterday morning ia the ruilw.iy station at Woodside, Wairanpa, in an unconscious state. On examination i: was found that one of his wrists was cut severely, and he was also stabbed in the left side. On regaining consciousness Hawley said he had inflicted the injuries himself with a sheath knife, which wa9 lying at his side. No reason for the act is assigned. Dunedin, > his Day. A largely attended meeting was held here on Saturday afternoon, with the view of inducing Sir William Pox to stand for KangitikiM at the next e : ecti<m. A letter from Sir William was rend, positively declining to stand, as he intends to go Home shortly. It was stated by the county chairman that Sir William's trip Home is on account of Lady Fox's health, which has broken down, and can only be restored by a sea voyage. A re*oluexpressiug sincere regret at Sir William's decision, was carried unanimously. Palmebston, This Day. The Salvation Army started here on Sunday and hud a very large audience. Captain Wilkinson is in command, acsisted by Lieutenants Kear and Newbuld. They secured some converts last night.
