' The Mayor said the Benevolent Societj had sufficient funds to relieve this familj for some time, and speaking as treasurei of the Society, he was sure it would dc something in the matter, but hitherto il had not been appealed to. Cr Fowles called attention to the nee:! of a clock in the Reading Room, and saic 1 he should have great pleasure in presenting one. His offer was accepted by the Council with thanks. Cr Loudon moved, and Cr Fowles seconded, That plans and specifications be prepared and tenders called for filling in Kimbolton road drain. Considerable discussion followed. The Mayor thought it very desirable to divert the drain first, and have the ex- ' periehce of the winter to see if the diversion was a success. He also thought it very undesirable to borrow from the bank money to do this work when if it were delayed for a few months there would be no need of getting an overdraft. Cr Loudon said he would withdraw his motion for the present. Cr Fowles moved, and Cr Carthew seconded, That tenders be called for the diversion of the Kimbolton road drain. Cr Higgin spoke in support of the motion. Cr Loudon agreed with the remarks of Cr Higgin as to the desirableness of the work being done, and would waive his • suggestion in favor of the opinion expressed by the Mayor. After further conversation the motion was put and carried unanimously. Resolved, That the next Ordinary meeting of the Council be held on Thursday, 22nd inst. The matter of the petition of a number of settlers re the formation and metalling of Derby street, from Kimbolton road to the new Catholic Church was again brought up, and it was understood Cr Thompson would table a notice of motion on the subject. The Council then adjourned.
