Warnings Against New Zealand
The Auckland Star's London correspondent writes: — The warnings against emigrating to New Zealand, which appear in the English provincial dailies nowadays, emanate, I am informed, from the Manitohan and Canadian "touts," whose busi uess it is to disparage all fields for emigration but their own. What, for in. stance, do you make of the following, clipped from the Middlesbore "Daily Exchange" of February 14: — '-'No one should turn Ne* Zealand farmer without well counting the cost. English farming may be bad enough just now ; but ia 40 years' experience of English' rural districts, I never, says a recent correspondent, saw such unmitigated drudgery' as I see in the averago farmhouse here. "With all the sunshine and the material plenty, I miss what used lo be the oharn^pf the English homestead— a general sense of ease and quiet enjoyment of life. For one thing, there is more intellectual development in the colonies, and culture dis-_^ agrees with toil. ; Tho old Toryobiection to educating the labouring dtasaees- had more than a mere show in reason 40 it. New Zealand spends half a millnn. -sterling every year on eduoatink its children, and one result is that it must look elsewhere for itß plough boy s and dairymaids. Government offices, clerkships, Sohoolmasterships, are in universal . demand— anything but the farm!."
