It has transpired that General Gordon has telegraphed from Khartoum to the British Government announcing that he intends henceforth to act according to his . own discretion as regards affairs in the Soudan. Despatches to hand from General Gordon, dated Khartoum, 9th instant, | announce that a prominent merchant at El Obeid reports to him that the followers of Mahdi have been recently twice defeated by a force of loyal Arabs, and that the rebels are now surrounded. Bombat, April 18. The police in this city and otber towns in India bave effected the seizure of largo quantities of a printed proclamation, signed by Mahdi, urging the Mussulmans to join his ranks. Calcutta, April 18. Cholera is now raging severely in this city and has already committed great havoc among the native population. Dabmstadt, April 19. Her Majesty the Queen is suffering from lumbago, and is confined to her apartments. (Her Majesty has since recovered.) London, April 18. Mr Torrens, presiding at a meeting of the shareholders of the Baok of Adelaide to-day, considered that the monetary pressure of the col ooy would not be removed until the value of tbe wheat crop surplus had been circulated. He further stated that there was no immediate prospect of a rise iv the price of wheat.
