The Fielding Star. THURSDAY,APRIL 17,1884. The Timber Trade
» In a leading article on the railway tariff the Hawera Star says with reference to the unjust pressure put on the timber industry : — " We are certainly of opinion that if a company owned the line, and it were shown to them that sawmiilers were willing to use up what would otherwise be waste material without any profit to themselves, for the sake of keeping their mills and hands in full work in alack times — the company would be willing to meet them in the matter rather than stop trade and lose the haulage. Mere grumbling on the part of sawmillers will, however, do no good, and their wisest course would be to draw up a memorial to the Minister of Public Works, and forward it through Major Atkinson. There can be no doubt that the Major is earnestly solicitous for the welfare of the district, and if a good case is made out he would, no doubt, give the application all the support he honestly could." This suggestion is a good one, and is worthy of being adopted, even although the agitation in the South Island will attract most of the attention of the Government.
