Stones of Blasphemy
The story is told of an old man near Philadelphia who, with twelve kindred spirits, was taking supper th<« other evfniwr- at a hotel. Soon after the ! old man utrered an oath so terrible and blasphemous that it shocked even bis comrades. Suddenly he grew pale, complained of great pain, exclaimed *' I'm afraid it is my last supper af er all,/ and wert home, suffering se▼erelv, and feeling as if he had been struck a heavy blow upon his head. The next morning- ho was found dead in b«d. _ . Two or three years ago an Illinois farmer who was very anrious about Having his wheat before it rained was struck dead by a bolt of lightning in his doorway just aa he was cursing for the thunder storm that came on and soaked his grain. ! A drunken man imitated an nncouth way of putting out his tongue which s minister indulged in while preaching. But to his horror the mocker found that he could not draw in his tongue again. The tongue stiffened, para'ysis ehsued, "and in a lew days the man died. An imprisoned old clergyman cursed a young girl whom he heard laughing at him outside his cell, >ho was afterwards blown from a rock and drowned in the sea^ Whether anyone is inclined to be-lieve-these stories or not, all coarse caricature of religious beliefs is lik-i profane swearing, "neither brave polite, nor wise." — Detroit Free Press.
