Sporting Notes
♦ Notes by " Procvov." I was fairly successiul in my atleuipls to "Liv" the Turanaki winners — the Maiden. Flying, and Derby being won by my si-lectiou* ; whilst they were second in the Welcome Stakes and Hurdle races. Refrigerator, my fancy for the T.J. C, did not start. I will endeavor to pick the Waverley-Waitotara winners. For the Hurdles, Diomedes is undoubtedly very leniently treated by Mr Biggie, and w-uld, I think, win if the jumps were the usual 3ft 9in. but as they are only 3ft 4in the race will be run a bit too merrily for the big 'un. Soninus, if he goes straight, even with lOst 12lb, will have a great show, but the uncertainty about his jumping makes me pass him over. The three nearest the post at the finish will probably be Denbigh, Parnell, and Diomedes, and I think they will finish in the order named. Nine have accepted for the Flying, and I expect to see the top weight, Hinemoa, win, with Gabble and Dusk as her nearest attendants. Mr Scott should win the Saplings with Parvenu, if he takes the colt up. He is far and away the best 2-year-old running on the coast this season, and can, I think, give the little Miss Puritan about 211 b, honest and good as she undoubtedly is. Eleven have cried con i ent for the Autumn Handicap, the big race of the meeting. Of the lot I like Hinemoa, Alitia, Armourer, and Martha best, and if Ahua is in good form I shall look no farther tor the winner. He can do the distance on a fair groand with 7st 51b, his weight iv this race, in 2miu 43see, or near it, and I don't think that time will be bealen at Waver'ey. However, Hinemoa will make him gallop all the way, and should get second, with Armourer in the other place. The four Mai len Placers are an indifferent lot, of which Parnell looks about the best on paper. However, he may have to meet more than his match in Exchange. Our old friend, " Billy- go-by-em," has been distinguishing himself at Taranaki pulling off the double — Sleoplechasc and Hurdle Race. What a pity is that a good little horse like that should be disqualified for being run "crooked" in a paltry LIO hack race. The Taranaki Club, racing under rules of their own, al ow the horse to run, but wherever the Wanganui rules are in force he is debarred, which is a just and righteous judgment on the party who brought him here to steal the public money. I see something of the same sort has been tried at Nelson, and met a like reward. Disqualification of fche horse is the only effective way of put- | ting down swindles of that class because you touch the pocket of the perpetrators and not their honor, a thing which is too foul to have anything to do with. There is just the faintest aroma about the starting of Gabble for the Maiden at Taranaki. It may have been all right. but I fancy the gentle. nan who ran her knew her qualifications. This sort of thing is calculate i to make people "gabble." I Leonora has been made a big pot for ! the Auckland Easter Handicap, having [ been backed down to sto 4. If she gets done it will give rise to more " howl " by the donkeys who will back horses long before the races at such short prices. Leonora will have to run a great mare to get a situation, and I don't think she can win — either Radames, Maori, or Libeller being decidedly better treated than she is.
