The Oroua Valley Survey
TO THK EDITOB OF THE STAR. Sib, — In an article headed The Oroua Valley Route the Manawatu Times makes an insinuation, under the guise of holding the scales evenly between Mr Mitchelson and myself, that there is a possibility no promise was ever made of the commencement of the Oroua Valley survt-y within a limited ti-i-e. The first promise was a verbal one. in presence of, Mr Linton, on the 23rd January, that it should be commenced on the return of Mr Rochfort from Nelson, where he was then absent on leave, which leave wonld be up in a week. The second was a verbal one also, that the survey would be commenced as soon as Mr Rochfort had started a party from ~fe Te A wamutu, which he was then occupied in doing, probably another week. On the 13th March, when there was still no sign of Mr Rochfort, I wired to the Minister of Public Works, asking when Mr Rochfort might be expected, as the public wore getting anxious, and received the enclosed telegram in reply, which I then handed to you for publication :— " Rochfort expected to htart Oroua survey in about a week. "E. Mitch bison." If the editor of the Manawatu Times is still unsatisfied, and wishes to see the telegram itself, please be good enough to shovr it to him or his agent on application. — I am, «fee, D. H. Macabthob.
