Oroua County Council
The usual monthly, meeting was held yesterday, at the offices of tie Council. Manchester street. Present— Crs Macarthur (chairman), Engel, Bailey, Linton, Mcßeth, and Douglas. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman read a statement of imprest account. The following correspondence was then read: — To Public Works Department, re imprest payment of £21>91 Is 2d. Same re proclamation of Feilding- Bunnythorpe Soad as a main road. Same, with list of works. Same, with application lor grant on account of Manawatu Gorge Bridge. Same, re Gorge hailway Line. From Public Works I epartment, returnplans of Longbum deviation, WellingtonManawstu Railway Company. To Colonial Secretary, re suspension petition. Same, restatement of accounts. From Property Tax Department, re native lands Kiwite* Riding (2). To Property Tax Department, applying for rates for '■ rown Lands. From Property Tax Department, re application for rates for Crown Lands. To Co onial Treasurer re Avcahuri Bridge. Same, applying for imprest payment. S;ime with £2091 1 s 2d. From Hankins and Baker, re Wanganui Harbor Board rates. The Chairman read a statement of the expenditure of the county since its inception, as follows : — Expenditure to 31st March.—Advertising, £105 Is 4d; hospital. £49 13s 7d ; election expenses, £56 ss; rate roll, £11 Is6d; seal, £4 10k; Manawatu County interest, £40 9s 4d; bank. £14; separation petition. £18 5s 6d ; stationery, £11 Is lid ; travelling etpenses, £71 s<f 4d ; clerical cxpenws, £57 17s 6J; rate citation, £32 7<; dog register. £12 8« ; dog badges, £3 18s 64; Licencing Act expenses, £5 18s 6d ; postage and letters, £10 15<-, Sundries, £9 ll« lid; total, £511358 d. Charged to— Ashurst Riding, £69 8s 4d; Fitzherbert, £59 13s 11.1; Kiwitea, £91 17s 9d; Taonui, £170 3s 61; Wait ;na, £123 05 2d; total. £514 3s B<l. Some comment was made by Crs Li' 1 , ton and Baiiey on the item for advertising, but the Chairman explained that it was not larger than usual, and it compared favorably with similar charges for (he Manawatu County. He (the chairman) had taken no responsibility in this matter, but had left it entirely in the hands of the Council. The Chairman stated that the closing meeting of the Oroua Count j Couucil would probably be in May. Cr Douglas said that the Colonial Secretary had informed him wben in Wellington there would be no difficulty in obtaining the suspension, of the Counties Act. The chairman wad a telegram trom Hnjor Atkinson stating that there wan no money available to be expended on the Awahuri Bridge. Cr Engel stated that Cr Walker had asked him to move the motion standing in Cr Walker's" name. Cr Engel a moved the motion in the name of Cr Walker, of which notice was given last sittings. As there was no seconder the matter dropped. Proponed by Cr Douglas, seconded by Cr Linton, That a license be granted to Mr A. Bell to slaughter cattle on section 44 on the Manchester Block.— Carried. The Chairman proposed, and Cr Bailey seconded, That the report of the Taonui and Fitcherbert committee, dated March Bth, 1884, be adopted, and the districts as therein defined — the districts orer which the special rate of one sixth of a penny for Karere, No 1 road, and two fifths of a penny for Bnnnythorpe, Kairacga roads, Ere to be struck, be hereby confirmed.— Carried. . Cr Mcßeth proposed, and Cr Bailey seconded, That s ; poll be taken for the construction of the Cheltenham crossroad for the special rate, and that the. chairman be authorised to give the required'noticei ' The district over which the special rate is to be struck in defined as follows :— Bounded on the north by < the Otamakapua- Block, on the east by the Oroua River, and on the West by the Manchester Block. Amount of yearly .'payment, £33" 12b 7d : taking a rate of 'one! seventh of .a penny in the pound on the rateable value :.of L6Q.673.— Carried. ...
