RACING FIXTURES.
Aprilig— Waverley-Waitotara Meeting. April 14— Feilding J.C. Annual Meeting. April ,13 and 14 — Auckland Autumn Meeting. April 14 and 15— Canterbury Autumn Meeting. . May 17— Marton- Rangitikei Steeplochase '■■' Meeting. May 24— Wanganui J.C. Steeplechase Meeting. May 24— Palmerston Meetingv NOTBB BY ". PEOCTON." There; should be good gpbrt in the Clutha River for the disciples of Isaac Walton. A^ Sergeant McLeod has seen several shoals of fish ranging from 4 to 10ft>s weight each, and two that the gentleman is certain could not be less thanlOOlbs. It is supposed the Sergeant's vision was assisted by glasses— two or more ! Some very good baskets of trout have been taken in the southern provinces during the season, and we may hope for some in this district before many years. Bhagß and other winged enemies. of imported fish are not nearly so numerous here as in the South Island. The open season for imported game commences to-day, and good ..bags of hares may be expected ; pheasants also ai c fairly numerous, and would doubtless have been more so but tor mistakes some of our sportsmen make. It is difficult to judge the exact length of a tail when the possessor is going away from you, but I hope color will count for more this season than last. The Bulls Coursing Club open the season on Maj Ist, with an Open Allaged Stake of £20, runner up £10, which should attract a good entry. lam afraid Feilding will not be represented ; though there are several good puppies about they are not forward enough to compete in such a stake with any show of success at present. - . The handicaps for Warerley are not equal to the usu.\l happy efforts of the gentleman who framed them. Why Somnus should be called upon to give Dioinedes 7lbs, and lumps of weight to Dusk, Denbigh, and Onapu is a mystery. Armourer too is a very hardly used animal, none of hi* performances hare entitled him to equal weights with Bayard, or to give Refrigerator and Ahua 21b and 41bs respectively. lam afraid the acceptances will fall short in consequence. Martini-Henry's beating in the Champion has caused him to go down somewhat in the betting for the A .J.C. St. Leger, and Le Grand to be installed first favorite. I think, however, the New Zealander will upset him, and win in spite of pubhe opinion.
