In consequence of the prevailing drought the water supply to the city and suburbs of Sydney is bow merely intermittent. Accounts from the conntry districts generally state that great distress prevails owing to the want of water. There is no present sign of rain. News is to hand from New Guinea that the inland tribes there are engaged in a fierce war, and the Rev. Chalmers has proceeded to the scene of hostilities to endeavor to restore peace. Melbourne. March 31. Arrived, this afternoon, the P. and O. steamship Valetta, ~ with"~fne" "TJrihaTsT mails, dated London, February 22. Preparations are being made for according a welcome on Wednesday next to the Rev. D. Barry before his departure for Sydney.
Melboitrne, March 29. The proprietors of the Melbourne Age have organised another expedition to proceed with the exploration .of New Guinea, under .the leadership of Captain Strohan. The party, which consists of six men, has left here for New Guinea. Stdkbt, March" 29. Hanlan gave an exhibition of rowing at Manly this afternoon, when he pulled a race with Edwards, his trainer. Neither Trickett nor Clifford was prevent, as expected. Fully 8,000 persons witnessed Hanlan's performance.
