Backsliding
Terrible to relate, Dr Benjamin Ward Richardson., : the "celebrated temperance doctor, is if we may credit a cot- temporary,.. showing symptoms of backsliding. Writing in the" North American K«vi«w" on the causes of infelicity, he says : — "1 ani a toiul obstainftr^ but i am an Honest olnever also; and I confirm from direct observation the old saying, that, ' wine inaketh glad ihc heart of man.' What is wanted now is that lh« united science of the age should ap ly itself to the problem of giving the world a drink that j-halt make j^lad thi' hearts oi teetotallers without carrying with it any of he insidious and demoralising effects of the demon alcohol— a good, honest, cheertul drink, which on a cold night iniv^ht be diluted with hot water, sweetened with a little sugar, and, perhaps, flavoured with the squeeze of a lemon, and which, these conditions should have fche *'ffecc of, for a fl«otin^ moment, lightening the burden of exi&teuce, and loosening the chain with which we are darkly bound."
