A vacancy hav ; ng oct-.n-red in th. representation of Cambridgeshire in the House of Commons, owint* to the resign.-i---lion of the senior (Liberal) member, _ir Henry Brand, Ex- Speaker, who has been eievated to the Peerage, the election took place yes:erday and resulted in the return of a Conservative candidate (Thornbill) by a large majority over his liberal opponent. An election also took place yesterday for a representation uf Huntingdonshire, when Sir Robert Peel was returned in the Liberal interest. It has transpired that France has claimed an i demnity from China for the expenses at the Tonquin campaign, the amount being fixed at a minimum of six million pounds sterling.
