(Before F. Y. Lethbridge, and H. L, Sherwill, Esqs., J.P's. Wednesbat, Mabch 1 9th, 1884. Staito v Staite. In this case ..Mrs Theresa Staite applied for a pro tectionV order against her husband; W. S. Staite.-: . M r Sandilands appeared Jofc^Mrs Staite. Mr Staite conducted his own ene.
Mr Staite objected to -Mj-Sandilnnds appearing for Mrs Staite on the ground that a married woman^ had-juy^JjiosUg to employ a solicitor. The Court refused to allow the objection. / tr Theresa Staite deposed : She was the wife of W S. Staite ; bad- beefriivingxja Feilding for abont a month, and befdie that had been living in Halcombe, with her stepfather ; Mr Staite's /induct" w*» very offensive; he used bad i langiihgip, and brought home objectionable men ; he very often came home -tipsy ; he dpevfc all his money ia drink; there was no money supplied for household purposes ; do not feel safe in the house, with him ; he wanders about fancying' the police are watching him. ; ' ... •■' Jf IT Crdss-examined : Mr Staite did not
supply the house regularly ; -the butcher and baker were supplying the' house, for which Mr Staite was responsible to.them; had come groceries, in tlie hovne ; have received £2,; a good deal of winch was returned to Stnife-in shillings and halfcrowns ; couldn't, saj: how much Mr Staite had earned during th* month ; had offered to withdraw th* (case it Mr Staite would knock off drink for three months ; was acting entirely on her own responsibility ; had been cautioned it tjiis ordar was granted it would be ruin to" self ani family; it conid not be worse than it is ; did not assault Mr Staite frequently.

during which time he had only earned £10; so far from speeding money recklessly such iras not the case ; had provided everything for the house; he f wo.ie he was not safe in the house with. hia wife; he had cautioned her that if y thia order was made she would bare agai* ,V> lire with her relations; he blamed his wife for his having been struck off the rolls ; if the order was made, it would-be ruinous to her, to the children, and to
witness. '.': A 77 Mr Staite then addressed the Court. Mr Sandilands spoke in reply.
