A Convent Burned
The Convent of the Sisters of Notre Dame, at Belleville, Illinois, was burned^ . % at eleven o'clock on the night of 6th Jan/,"'"'' involving a great loss in life aad a lois'wV property of from £5,000 to £7,000. Five, nuns jumped from a fifth-ntorv window, and were killed, one instantly. Ihe fire was one of the most destructive to life and property that Belleville has ever ex- - poriencedi When the ruins bad Bufi> - ciently cooled, volunteers went to work to bring out tho bodies, and a terrible sight was revealed. At time* the search* era would find (wo or three charred masses huddled clonely together, seen* ingly seeking protection against the flames. The deaths numbered 27, of which 22 were pupils and five sinter*. Among ! the latter wast Sister Superior. The belies were all near each other, and the Sister Superior's body neeined to he the centre of a ghastly circle of black remain* The work of • xhunmtion was awful, and more than once stopped because of the tfickeninit sen<ati«»n« which overcame the; workmen. The Convent was a favorite Nuiiixl, and purr* -nixed by ' atholio families, pupils being sent there from al parts of the country.
