State of Trade

Wb are put in the possession of some interesting facts relative to the state of trade in various parts or the colony by the Industrial Gazette. In Anckland prosperity is the rale, and the rapid growth of the town and suburbs during tke past two years is rightly calling forth the surprise of att. 3aildia£»b»r«.eprfr.og ap

and are springing up in every direction as a consequence of the high rents ruling. A rich harvest is being reaped by property holders. At New Plymouth, the chief town of the adjoining district, a very different state prevails. Rents and ■■ values an* down, and empty houses and i shops are numerous. Business men complain bitterly of the marked decrease in the commercial prosperity of the town during the last year or so. Wanganut is quite as bad. Napier is considerably better. Wellington is improving and . entending. though not with rapidity. Nevertheless business is sound, and j failures of importance few and far between ! In the south trade is uniformly bad, having gradually become so during the past two years. In Christchurch the opinion of Husiness people is that we, in the North Island, are much the best off, and comparatively speaking they are perfectly correct. Even although the wool and grain money may put southern finances in a better position, yet we have the same advantages, besides having prepared for a bad harvest. A good harvest having turned out after all has put farmers and others affected in better spirits, and induced a feeling of confidence which did not obtain during the last month of 1883, or the first of 18S4.
