April 14 and 15 — Canterbury Autumn Meeting. May 17 — Mttrton-Uangitikei Steeplechase Meeting. May 24— YVanganui J.C. Steeplechase Meeting. . . . May 21— Palinerston Meeting. Notes by " Pbocton." The Turakina annual meeting will be held on Thursday next, and from the number of entries and acceptances 'for the various events should proTC a Tery interesting one, although as Ahua, Consul, B<iyard, Eefrigerator, and Coy are absentees, it will not give one much insight into Wanganui Cup and Derby mysteries. In past years Turakina has been looked upon by a great many as a good meeting to attend to get a line ror Wanganui, but this year it will prove an exception to the rule. Mr Higgie has made some capital handicaps (and I anticipate somo slashing sets-to near the judges box) for which six havo accepted. For the Hurdles, Mount heads the list with list 91bs, Diomedes being next with list 2lbs, l.angitira 10s t lOlbs, Bugler lOst Slbs, Onepu 9st 121bs, and Loch Lomond OstlOlbs, are the others. Mount holds them all safe, except perhaps Bugler, who meets him on 171 bs better terms than at Palmorston, which differonce ought to bring them very close together at the finish, both being first rate jumpers. I havo a fancy for the top weight though, and think the result will be Mount 1 Bugler ... 2 Diomedes 3 For the maiden there nro four en trios, the best of which is, I think. Kowhia. Five havo accepted for the Handicap . Lnurel Bst 51 b, Orphan 7st lOlh, Witiora 7st Rib, Hippona 7*t 51b, Kiwikai 6st 91b, all of which arc so well handicapped that it will be difficult to pick. , However, I fancy the finish will be between Laurel, Orphan, and Hipponn, and I shall place them in the order named. ' : > 7 Soyen have cried content for the District, which ought to be a fine contest. Lnurel, the top weight, should again hare my vote, but she will have to run a great mare in the Handicap to be so close as I expect to see her at the finish, so I shall re'y on a fresh horse, and I think he will turn up in Armourer, who has a weight that he ought to be thoroughly masterof. However, Ringleader, Lndy Artist, and Purawanui may make the son of Tiib.il I Cain stretch his neck. •• Of tho two sapling candidates Parvenu kliouM win, he being a nice smart youngI sler. -..
