Yielding to the demands of public opinion, as expressed by the Press aud otlierwi.se throughout Great Britain, the Government have appointed a Koyal Comimssiou to report upon the housing of the poor in London and suburbs, and to devise means for the amelioration of their condition, if such should be found necessary. In the House of Commons to-day, the Address-in- Ueply to tho Speech from the Throne y;i\s again under consideration, and was finally adopted. Sir H. B. W. Brand has formally resigned the Speak ership in tho House of Commons. Gordon Pasha has declared the Soudan as independent of Kgypt. Gordon Pasha's proclamation is how explained to have simply meant permission to retain the system of domestic slavery in the Soudon, not to authorise slave hunting. The- French Government are now offering now terms to the authorities in Madagascar. The price of Australian wheat remains without alteration. In the wool market greasy and scoured Merinos and coarse crossbreds have fallen a halfpenny. Tho finest descriptions of crossbreds and combing Merinos are realising prices slightly below those of the December sales. 107,000 bales are catalogued.
