bkptkb's telkgbams. MELBovBiiK, February 19. Sir Charles Sladen, C.".M.G., member of the Legislative Council of Victoria for the Western Province, is dangerously ill. Rrcievcd February 21, 1 a.m. Sydney. February 20. In the Legislative Assembly to-night the Government announced that the tnx ation proposal made by the Treasurer in the Budget . Statement, had been withdrawn, except in so far as increased duty on tobacco is concerned. The Govern ment propose to meet the expected deficiency in the revenue by retrenchment to the extent »f three quarters of a million sterling. In addition to this it is believed that the Customs' revenue will show an increase of £170,000 sterling during the year.
