The mail- was theu transferred to the Germanic, which broke ■ her shaft and had not arrived when the Zealandia left San Francisco. , The reformatory ship Clarence was burned in the river Mersey on January 16th. .All hands were saved. Mail advices have been received in London from China. Several Chinese bankers committed suicide, owing to the unsettled political situation and the - deplorable stale of the money market. Miss Hogarth, the surviving executrix of Charles Dickens, has taken steps to prevent the pnblicaiion in England of the novelist's letters to his solicitor, on the ground that they were never intended for the public. Mr Gladstone has issued a circular to the Liberal members of tiie House of Commons, requesting their attendance at ' the opening of Parliament on February 6th, as' it is the desire of the Government to submit at as early a date as possible proposals of much interest and importance. A sensation has been caused by a bequest of £500,000 made by a wealthy London lady to Pope Leo XfTI. Rumours of Fenian plots are heard in London on every hand.
